Travel Writing

I’m a real daughter of the jet age!

Born in 1968 – a year before the jet age became the space age – I went on my first airplane flight when I was all of two months old, when my Australian Mum went home to show me off to the grand-parents. You could say I’ve been flying ever since. From early years living in the Fijian goldfields and flying home to NZ on the rickety old DC8s, through my student years when I flew up and down the country stand-by and sleep-deprived, to the travelling I did on my adventurous OE (Overseas Experience – an Antipoden rite of passage) around Asia and the Pacific, and on through into my early career years, until now when living on the other side of the world from home ensures I earn flight miles in the thousands. Of course not only do I love travel, but I love writing. The equation looks a bit like this:

love travel + love writing = love writing travel stories

Why I love travel so much is best summed up in this quote -

“Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. Travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.” – Freya Stark
