I ate some great food in Porto, but somehow the idea of salted cod and Caldo Verde (a green broth) didn’t seem so appropriate in the warm September Portuguese sun, but now it’s turned cold in the UK I was reminded of some of those recipes and that good honest fresh food.
The Mercado Bolhao is Porto’s marketplace, still used today as a market but also as a meeting place and like markets all around the world the Mercado Bolhao is full of characters who have seen everything that life can throw at them. My fellow travel blogger gorgeous Nadine from the Nadwork even managed to secure the help of a friendly (and somewhat flirty!) local, Bruno.
They say money is the universal language but I’m betting it’s actually flirting!
There was something timeless about the mercado and when we finally finished our video recording we stepped out onto the Rua Catarina, a popular shopping street in Porto to find all our colleagues had disappeared. Maybe we had fallen into a time warp?
But at least I picked up a great recipe for Caldo Verde, which I’m pulling out now for the cold UK weather. And in case you want to join me here’s a fab recipe from The Hairy Bikers at the BBC. I trust every recipe that starts – first drink a glass of port.
