Photo a day July – Texture

by Vicki Jeffels on July 12, 2012

It’s hard to photograph a texture, almost as hard as it is to describe a feeling. But this photo from my Englishman demonstrates the harsh rough bark of a tree, on which two snails are attempting to make their way.

I’ve not ever thought about it before but do snails feel? Can they feel the tearing bark on their underbelly, which I know from childish investigations is smooth and slimy fragility.

Surely that underbelly must rip? And if it does scratch and scuff do the snails feel it?

I’ve never heard a snail complain about their environment, but it doesn’t mean they don’t hurt.

People are like that too. Just look at the people around you. Look carefully at the ones who smile lots and complain little. You’d never know what was truly going on behind their smiles, and the carefully patted down foundation and sweep of lipstick.

I often wonder. Are they hurting on the inside?

So often it’s those that look so well composed on the exterior that are the most fragile inside. Only loved ones, or those particularly perceptive know the difference between a genuine, heart swelling, eye crinkling smile of happiness and a smile of ‘putting on a brave front’ in a huge effort to try and not burden others with the huge weight of darkness within. xx take care my friend xx

Snails are smart. They bring their own lubrication with them to ease their passage through life. I’m sure there’s a lesson there somewhere.

maybe they were having a race!!
we did a home schooling project on snails once and the slime under them protects their undersides
