It’s been a whirlwind week. Flying out to Italy. Traipsing around Venice amongst the hoardes of clicking tourists. Frenetic. Wonderful, yes. But busy.
On our last day in Venice we took a Vaporetto out to an island in the Venetian lagoon called Burano. Not the similarily named Murano, which is reknown for its beautiful glass products, but Burano which is reknown for…
Actually, I wasn’t too sure. It seemed it was once a centre for lace-making and I did stumble across a couple of pictures of brightly coloured houses. That couldn’t be it. Could it? There are houses painted like that in Cornwall, hell there are even houses like that down the road!
But it seemed a good idea to escape the madding crowds of Venice and take a calming ride across the sea to Burano. If nothing else it was late in the day and the sun would soon set and spin a dance set of shadows across the turquoise waves. We pulled into Burano’s narrow canal and put-putted past a few painted houses. Three, maybe four.
Was that all there was?
“We’ll give it half an hour, take some pics and then jump back on the boat” my Englishman decided. Nodding my consent we wandered down the little cobbled lane, past houses draped in pastel shrouds, with shutters placed as colour accents, even a photogenic moggy or two. There was no sound. Perhaps the quiet lapping of water and the gentle groan of ropes tying small fishing boats to the canal side. A quiet voice or two as locals chatted outside their homes.
And there was the sound of us.
Sighing with the relief of the calm.
Disclaimer: We flew to Venice (and back from Rome) as guests of Groupon Getaway. All opinions are my own.
